A.L. TWO-START STUDS
Roy Halladay (ChW, @Cle) – Halladay’s averaging over eight innings a
start, with excellent peripherals. He may not get the wins, especially against
Cleveland and C.C. Sabathia, but he’ll do ya solid.
Greg Smith (Tex, @Tex) – Smith’s impressive numbers might come down a
bit after facing Texas and their 111 team OPS+, but the Rangers’ pitching is downright
Lima-esque, and Smith will reap the benefits.
Javier Vazquez (@Tor, @Sea) – Vazquez has been quietly very good over the
last year-plus and gets pretty easy draws against Toronto and Seattle.
A.L. TWO-START SCRUBS
Jeremy Bonderman (Bos, NYY) – Bonderman has a 3.86 ERA despite an 18/23 K/BB
ratio in 35 innings. Something’s gotta give, and I think the Yankees and Red
Sox will be happy to take it.
Kenny Rogers (@Min, NYY) – Roasted.
Steve Trachsel (@LAA, @KC) – Get off the Trax!
A.L. TWO-START WILDCARD
Scott Kazmir (@Bos, LAA) – Kazmir’s first action of the year. He wasn’t exactly dominant in his two rehab starts,
but he’s going to have to be good right away against two of the league’s best
offenses.
N.L. TWO-START STUDS
Cole Hamels (SF, @SF) – The fact that it’s Hamels is really just a
bonus; the opponent tells you all you need to know.
Johan Santana (@Ari, Cin) – Not a gimme, because pitching at Arizona is no
picnic, but how can you bet against Santana?
Max Scherzer (Phi, @ChC) – My dog has two different-colored eyes too, but Mad Max
doesn’t like walks nearly as much as my pup does, issuing only three to go
along with his 38 K’s in 23 AAA innings. He’s an elite pitching prospect, but
he’s going to need to be a road warrior against the league-best Cubs offense.
N.L. TWO-START SCRUBS
Bronson Arroyo (@Atl, @NYM) – Repeat after me, baseball broadcasters:
Cincinnati does not have a great offense. Cincinnati does not have a great
offense! Say it out loud, it feels good. Arroyo isn’t going to win any
games coupling the Reds’ bats with his 1.77 WHIP.
Ubaldo Jimenez (StL, @SD) – Stay about from Jimenez until his strikeout
numbers no longer so closely mirror his walk numbers.
Andrew Miller (SD, @Was) – 48 hits in 25.3 innings means it doesn’t
matter how many guys you strike out, but Miller hasn’t struck out any in his
last two starts anyway. He needs to be in AA, not on your fantasy team.
N.L. TWO-START WILDCARD
Ben Sheets (@Hou, StL) – Sheets looked like a Cy Young contender before
missing a start with a triceps strain but then walked a career-high seven
batters in his last start, his first since suffering the injury.
QUICK HITS
In the wake of Rich Hill’s
surprising demotion, the Cubs called up the promising Sean Gallagher.
Gallagher had excellent stats in AAA, posting a 30/9 K/BB ratio in 29 innings,
allowing 21 hits. He’ll be in the bullpen to begin with, but could get moved to
the rotation if Jon Lieber struggles; then again, if Carlos Marmol’s
arm falls off from overuse, Gallagher might be a crucial bullpen piece.
I know Chris Iannetta really
sucked last year after getting a lot of hype as a potential Rookie of the Year
candidate, but why are the Rockies still starting Yorvit Torrealba ahead
of him? Torrealba is hitting a scintillating .238/.291/.388, right around his
career line of .250/.312/.391. Iannetta deserves another chance.
